Cola Ho Lok Yee

Micro Dynamics

Workshop:

Discover a unique movement experience in the "Micro Dynamics" led by Hong Kong-born artist Cola Ho. With a diverse background in Chinese Dance, Kung Fu, and Ballroom Dance, Cola combines these disciplines to create an exciting, enriching movement exploration. She combines training from these mentioned principles, including elements specifically focused on the mobility and possibility of the spine and pelvis, using it as an engine to generate force for the Upper and Lower body, allowing generated force to sink into the floor for grounding and re-use to the body’s benefit.

Introducing torsion/Spiral coordination from 身韻 (Shenyun from Chinese dance: Force and Rhythm in the Teaching of Body Form), focusing on the aspects of enhancing body awareness within oneself and extending to the outside world, bringing attention to details and qualities. The Hip motion of Ballroom Dancing, to counter the force of momentum of the upper and lower body, building musicality and harmony with the body, and using it as a tool to create explosive, speedy dynamics with organic solution within the body and moving across the space as well. Strengthening and warm-up exercises like 馬步 (Horse Stance) from Kung Fu to prevent injuries and a strong stable mental state when fatigue hits. One can expect a high intensity of physicality from the workshop. The principles mentioned above would be implemented through elements of Floorwork, acrobatics, and dance phrases throughout the class.

Researching with the participants for a better, deeper understanding of how one functions more efficiently, creating more possibilities for movement regarding body type and muscular strength, and gaining clarity in chaotic situations that might occur physically and mentally to improve our experiences in learning and presence on stage performance.
